AXEMEN AND COBRAS GOING TO GAME 5

AXEMEN AND COBRAS GOING TO GAME 5

Mike Stackhouse

The Canora Cobras and Swan Valley Axemen are going to a fifth and deciding game in their SaskEast Hockey League semi-final series after a roller coaster of emotions on Friday and Saturday night.

On Friday, the Cobras stormed back from 5-2 down to post a 6-5 overtime win to stave off elimination in game three.  Both teams scored in the opening minute, but the Axemen opened up a 3-1 lead before the game was nine minutes old.  Down by three, Canora staged the comeback with two late second period scores from Sklyer Hladun and Scott Mickoski.  Tomas Hauber tied it at 5 just over the seven minute mark of the third and then, in overtime, Cole Rathgeber chased down a loose puck and went in alone to beat Deven Dubyk for the winning marker.

Rathgeber finished with two on the night while other goals came from Tomas Hauber and Logan Foster.  Swan Valley got two goals and one assist from Carter Cockburn while Josh Tripp and Jackson Betcher each scored one goal and one assist.  Jamie Valentino had the other Axemen marker.

On Saturday, the Axemen pulled netminder Dubyk with three minutes left in the third period and it paid off as Riley Morden's seeing eye shot from the point got through to make it a 3-2 game for the Cobras and hen Josh Riddell finished off a mad scramble in front of Durban Hleboff, who made 49-saves, with just nine seconds to go.

In the extra period, the Cobras carried most of the play and it was Foster who came through with the winner as Kody Rock caused a turnover and then it was Foster who finished it off for the 4-3 final.

Foster had a three point game to lead the way.  Scott Mickoski and Riley Stefanyshn rounded out the goals for Canora.

For the Stamps, Riley Morden scored the 3-2 goal on a point shot through traffic and then Josh Riddell potted the tying goal of a mad scramble.

Jamie Valentino had the other goal for Swan Valley.

Friday night in Langenburg, the Rocanville Tigers eliminated the Warriors with a 6-2 win.

Koal Roberts scored one and set up three others while Taylor Thompson and Dakota Odgers both enjoyed three point nights with a goal and two assists.

Ashley Howie, Ryan Regel, and Dylan Haney also scored for the Tigers.

Rylee Zimmer and Josh Peppler scored for Langenburg, who lose the series 3-1.
