Jonas Thomson scored at 2:28 of overtime to complete a stunning comeback from a four goal deficit as the Whitewood Orioles downed the Ituna Avalance 8-7 on Wednesday to complete a 2-games-to-0 series win in the 4th vs 5th preliminary round.
With the win, the Orioles will advance and play the Theodore Buffalos in the semi-finals, which is to begin this weekend (likely game one on Saturday in Theodore but that is yet to be confirmed).
The Avalanche led 5-3 after two periods and stretched the lead to 7-3 into the third before Whitewood started to rally and make it 7-4 midway through. It was 7-6 with three minutes remaining and then Trey Bear forced the extra session with 1:25 to play, setting the stage for Thomson's heroics and spoiling a splendid performance in net from Darren Filarczuk.
The league's other semi-final between Canora and Rocanville gets underway this weekend as well with the Tigers hosting game one on Friday and the Cobras game two on Saturday.
